The railway arrived at Watford Junction in 1837, with the construction of the London & Birmingham Railway. By the 1940s the station was owned and operated by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway, but it was also the northern terminus for London Underground's Bakerloo line.
Passengers are waiting for buses and taxis, while London, Midland & Scottish Railway vans collect and deliver parcels.
An Automobile Association sign on a lamp post gives directions to the American Red Cross Service Club, established for US servicemen stationed in the UK during the Second World War.
